Steven Torrence

Originally from Houston, TX, Mr. Torrence attended Cypress Ridge High School in Cy-Fair ISD. There he played bass trombone in the Marching band, Symphonic Band, Jazz Band, and Full Orchestra. On top of that he held the positions of section leader and loading crew captain for 2 years before graduating in 2007. It was in high school that he first knew he wanted to pursue career in music. His love for music education and performing coupled with the guidance and wisdom of his band directors fueled his determination to teach music.

Mr. Torrence went on to attend Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Music and his Certification to teach in Texas in May 2011. During his time at SHSU, he studied trombone with Mr. Allen Barnhill, Dr. Henry Howey, Mr. John McCroskey, and Mr. Ben Osborne. He also participated in the Sam Houston State University Wind Ensemble, Sam Houston Symphony Orchestra, Symphonic Band, Jazz Ensemble, Brass Choir, and Bearkat Marching Band. During his time in college, Mr. Torrence also taught private lessons at Huntsville High School. His students ranged from beginners to high schoolers.

In the Spring of 2010, Mr. Torrence had the wonderful opportunity to perform in a quartet that received Honorable Mention at the Annual Texas Christian University Trombone Quartet Competition in Fort Worth, Texas. Also in that same semester, he had the opportunity to perform in a brass ensemble accompanying the Sam Houston State University Chorale during their performance at the Texas Music Educators Association Convention in San Antonio, Texas.

Currently, Mr. Torrence is an Associate Band Director at L.V. Berkner High School.  His responsibilities include directing Concert Band II, Symphonic Band III, teaching sixth-grade band classes at elementary campuses within the Berkner cluster, and assisting with the Berkner Jazz Band, marching band and other concert bands.
